Midwest Book Review: "Phyllis Coates: Not Just Lois Lane" is a fascinating, informative, nostalgic study of an actress who enjoyed a successful and hard-earned career in both film and television. An extraordinary and unreservedly recommended pick for community and college/university library Theatre/Cinema/Television History/Biography collections, it should be noted for the personal reading lists of students, academia, cinema/television historians, and the legions of Phyllis Coates fans that her outstanding biography is available from BearManor Press in a paperback edition.
"Phyllis Coates: Not Just Lois Lane", a warm and detailed biography of a terrific actress who DESERVES a written tribute like the one Bill Cassara has gifted us with. Cassara was an investigator and a cop, and those skills serve him well once again in one of his best cinema books. If only Ms. Coates was still here to see it, to read it. Her feisty nature is beautifully captured in Bill's prose as we learn about her early studio movie contracts that led to stage work which led back to the movies and ultimately television.
"Phyllis Coates: Not Just Lois Lane" is our favorite new Hollywood biographical book of the year, beautifully illustrated with stills and personal photographs. Bill is absolutely the right man for the job, not only a long-time friend of hers but a thorough researcher and talented writer; his past bios, including Edgar Kennedy, Henry Brandon, Vernon Dent, and Ted Healy are must- owns for anyone who loves classic cinema. I've read the Bill Cassara's other books, and this one is right up there. Phyllis died before she could be extensively interviewed, so a lot of sleuthing was needed. As a former deputy sheriff and police investigator, Cassara leaves no stone upturned in digging up even the most trivial details of Phyllis' life.
